Since 1990, an old mansion in the Alonia neighbourhood of Agios Ioannis has welcomed mountaineers, walkers, and travellers looking for something real. What started as a single room has grown — slowly, deliberately — into seven independent guestrooms, each built with handcrafted furniture from the surrounding forest.
There is no air conditioning. No minibar. No television. In winter, we leave firewood at your doorstep for the wood-burning stove. In summer, the mountain air does the rest.
Alonia is for guests who trade comfort for connection — with the mountains, the silence, and a village where fifteen people still live as their grandparents did.

Our small restaurant, set in the old common room, serves breakfast and dinner made almost entirely from our own products. Sfakian pies in the morning. Slow-cooked Cretan dishes in the evening. Coffee, soft drinks, and snacks through the day.
The milk, the cheese, the herbs — sourced from the land around us, or from neighbours whose families have farmed these mountains for generations. Guests tend to remember the food as clearly as the hiking.
03 — Trailhead
A vast network of paths radiates from Agios Ioannis — to the sea, through gorges, and up to the highest peaks in Chania.
A marked downhill trail (white-red signage) through Kalos Poros — a viewpoint with staggering views over the sea — before a historic brick path descends to Agios Pavlos beach. Continue an hour west along the coast to reach Agia Roumeli, at the mouth of Samaria Gorge.
A gentle forest walk, easy enough for children, leading to a 600-metre cliff overlooking the Libyan Sea and the beach of Agios Pavlos below.
One of the most spectacular canyons in western Crete. The route starts at Aradena village (marked green-red) and descends through the gorge to Dialiskari beach.
The highest peak of the White Mountains. Reached by 4×4 transfer from Anopolis to Roussies, followed by a two-hour walk to the top. We arrange transport and advise on conditions.
A small opening at the root of a cliff leads into a world of sand, stalagmites, and underground lakes. The first 400 metres suit anyone; beyond that, experienced cavers only.
Alonia sits directly on the E4. Many of our guests are through-hikers crossing Crete on foot — we're a natural stopover, and happy to lend maps, suggest routes, and call ahead to coastal tavernas to check they're open.
04 — Beyond Hiking
The solitude and unspoiled landscape draw groups from around the world. We host retreats and provide meal service for practitioners.
Several cave systems are accessible from the village, ranging from beginner-friendly to advanced, with guided routes available.
The Aradena Bridge, a short drive away, is one of Europe's most dramatic bungee jumps — 138 metres over the gorge floor.
In winter, the high peaks of the White Mountains offer genuine ski touring — remote, untracked, and rarely crowded.
05 — The Region
A small village on the western side of Sfakia, 20 kilometres from Chora Sfakion. It sits at the end of the road — tucked into the south-facing slopes of the forested White Mountains.
Named after a 14th-century church on its southeast edge, where the original frescoes still survive. In the 1900 census, 179 people lived here. Today, fifteen remain — their main occupation, livestock.
Lefka Ori
The White Mountains cover most of the Chania prefecture. The highest peak, Pachnes, stands at 2,453 metres, with several others above 2,000m — beaches, sea cliffs, deep gorges, and ancient pine and cypress forests giving way to an alpine zone above the treeline.
The range hosts many endemic species of flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth.
